The Mk1 Escort RS2000 arrived in 1973 as the final performance model in Ford’s legendary Mk1 Escort line-up. Drawing on the success of the Mexico and RS1600, Ford wanted to create a fast, practical road car that delivered exciting performance without the complexity and expense of its competition-bred siblings.
The answer was simple but brilliant. Ford took the strengthened Type 49 Escort bodyshell already proven in its performance models and shoehorned in the rugged 2.0-litre overhead-cam Pinto engine. Producing around 100 bhp, the RS2000 offered strong, usable performance, impressive reliability and significantly lower running costs than the more exotic RS1600, making genuine Ford RS ownership attainable for far more enthusiasts.
The combination proved to be a masterstroke. The RS2000 quickly became one of Britain’s most desirable performance cars. Capable of reaching over 100 mph and sprinting from 0–60 mph in around nine seconds, it was every bit as exciting on a twisting B-road as it was turning heads wherever it went.
Today, the Mk1 Escort RS2000 is regarded as one of Ford’s greatest road cars. Whether restored to factory specification, modified for fast road use or built into a rally-inspired weapon, it continues to be admired by enthusiasts across the world.
